As a platform Zoom has proven to be the most effective for online singing teaching. My studio setup is fitted with fibre-optic ethernet broadband, an HD webcam and stereo sound. Zoom includes a number of interactive tools to make an online lesson fun and efficient.
Because of the slight time delay, however, it is impractical to accompany you in real time as in a normal lesson. You’ll need to be able to play music at your end, so that I can hear both your voice and the backing track. For this, it’s best if you can have a separate device (e.g. phone, tablet, Bluetooth speaker) on which to play music.
I use Dropbox to give students access to exercise mp3s and other learning resources. Backing track for songs and arias are readily available on Spotify, iTunes and YouTube, and I can recommend the best ones, or create one for you.
What you need for Zoom:
The better quality technology you have, the more effective the lesson will be. That said, most students get plenty of benefit using basic equipment like this:
Either a laptop or desktop computer with the following:
- A wired high-speed broadband connection (at least 1.2 Mbps)
- An HD webcam
- A microphone and speakers, or headphones (although they can interfere with the perception of your voice)
- A separate device to play backing tracks and exercises
Or:
- iPhone 4 or later, iPad Pro, iPad Mini, iPad 2 or later, iPod touch 4th Gen running iOS 8.0 or later
Or:
- iPadOS 13 or later
Or:
- Android 5.0x or later
As well as:
- Wireless broadband connection is best, although 4G or 5G usually work well.
- A separate device to play backing tracks and exercises.

Once you have booked your lesson, I will create a meeting to begin 5 minutes before the scheduled time, which will be sent to your email address. You can use the link in this email to log on and join the meeting at your convenience.
